The UK government has released a list of unclaimed estates belonging to 5,806 deceased individuals, including 58 Nigerians. These estates fall under Bona Vacantia, a legal status meaning that no known heirs have come forward to claim the assets, leaving them i the custody of the Crown.
Under UK law, estates that remain unclaimed for up to 30 years are permanently transferred to the Crown. However, if legitimate heirs can provide documentary evidence proving their relationship to the deceased, they may be able to claim the assets through the UK Government’s Bona Vacantia division.
To make a claim, potential heirs must provide birth certificates, marriage records, and other legal documents linking them to the estate in question. If no valid claims are submitted within the specified timeframe, the estate becomes state property.

The latest update, published by the Treasury Solicitor on March 26, 2025, contains details on these estates, including the names of the deceased, dates of birth and death, places of death, marital status, and official reference numbers.
