Senate Moves to Curb ‘Japa’ Trend, Seeks Diaspora Collaboration

The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step to address the rising wave of mass migration, popularly known as Japa, by unveiling strategies to make the country more attractive for its citizens.

At its maiden meeting in Abuja, the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, led by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), emphasized the need to restore faith in Nigeria and curb the brain drain affecting various sectors.

“This committee will work with key stakeholders to change the mindset of Nigerians, particularly the youth, and encourage them to see opportunities within the country. Patriotism must be earned through good governance and economic development,” Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.

She noted that countries like India, Pakistan, and Egypt have successfully implemented policies that retain skilled workers and even attract their diaspora back home. The committee plans to study these models and apply suitable strategies in Nigeria.

One of the key initiatives will be the creation of a comprehensive database of Nigerians living abroad, classified by country. This will help in fostering collaboration with international organizations to explore ways of leveraging diaspora expertise for national development.

Senator Victor Umeh (APGA, Anambra), the committee’s former chairman, expressed confidence in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s leadership, describing her as capable of driving impactful reforms.

With concerns over the increasing loss of skilled professionals, startups, and academics to migration, the Senate’s renewed focus signals a commitment to reversing the Japa trend and harnessing the potential of Nigeria’s diaspora for economic growth.
