Nigeria Tops Africa in U.S. Student Enrollment, Ranks 7th Globally


Nigerian students have solidified their impact on international education, emerging as the largest African group in U.S. colleges and universities and ranking seventh globally, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange.


In a Statement , released by the US Embassy on Tuesday, during International Education Week, highlights a 13.5% increase in Nigerian student enrollment, with 20,029 students attending U.S. institutions in the 2023/2024 academic year. More than 55% of these students are pursuing graduate-level studies, contributing to research and academic excellence in their respective fields.

Overall, U.S. colleges and universities now host a record-breaking 1,126,690 international students, the highest in history. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the fastest-growing region for international education, with a 13% rise in student mobility this year, following an 18% increase in 2022/2023.


This year’s report coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Open Doors Report, a key benchmark for global educational exchange.


The steady growth in Nigerian enrollment underscores the nation’s commitment to academic excellence and highlights the strong educational ties between the U.S. and Nigeria.
