NIDOPHIL Urges FG to Address Diplomatic and Immigration challenges

Nigerians living in the Philippines are facing increasing diplomatic and immigration challenges, compounded by the prolonged neglect of Nigeria’s embassy in Manila.

Tony Marioghae, Presiding Bishop of TEAM International and President of Nigerians in Diaspora (NIDOPHIL) Philippines, has called on the Nigerian government to urgently intervene. He emphasized the need for immediate action to protect the welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad

Despite their contributions to Nigeria’s economy through remittances, Nigerians in the Philippines continue to struggle due to systemic issues. According to Marioghae, the Nigerian embassy, which was damaged by fire over a year ago, remains in disrepair. The absence of a functioning passport sealing machine has worsened immigration difficulties, leaving many stranded.

“If Nigeria fails to modernize its foreign missions, it weakens our ability to counter negative stereotypes and exposes our citizens to unnecessary hardships,” Marioghae warned. He highlighted the struggles faced by Nigerians in various Asian countries and called for stronger diplomatic efforts to protect their rights.

Marioghae also advocated for greater diaspora inclusion in national affairs, including the right to vote and participate in government decision-making. “Nigerians abroad serve as cultural, moral, and diplomatic ambassadors. Providing them with necessary support will enhance their ability to represent Nigeria positively on the global stage,” he stated.

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to take decisive steps, prioritizing the reconstruction of the Manila embassy. According to him, restoring the embassy’s operations is essential for safeguarding Nigerians in the Philippines and strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence in Asia.
