The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have announced new strategies to foster collaboration between medical practitioners in Nigeria and their counterparts in the Diaspora. This initiative aims to harness the expertise of Nigerian doctors abroad to strengthen the country’s healthcare sector.
During a high-level meeting at NiDCOM’s headquarters in Abuja, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, urged the NMA to create a conducive ecosystem for such partnerships. She emphasized the global recognition of Nigerian doctors and their contributions to healthcare systems worldwide.
"Forget about criticism; Nigerian doctors are the best everywhere, and nobody can stop us. The world recognizes their brilliance, and it is time to harness this talent for the betterment of our country. Together, we can change the narrative," Dabiri-Erewa stated.
She reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Health, the NMA, and Diaspora healthcare providers to implement innovative partnerships and skill transfer initiatives.
Prof. Bala M. Audu, President of the Nigerian Medical Association, expressed gratitude for NiDCOM’s efforts and praised its role in engaging Nigerians abroad. He highlighted key takeaways from the 2024 National Health Summit, which focused on improving healthcare policies and access to quality medical care in Nigeria.
Prof. Audu also emphasized the critical contributions of Nigerian healthcare professionals abroad and the need for a structured platform to enhance collaboration.
“With the right funding in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), Nigeria can increase its production of medical supplies and enhance the healthcare system,” he said, underscoring the importance of clinical governance in delivering standardized and satisfactory medical services.
The NMA President called on NiDCOM to support the development of practical and implementable policies that can transform Nigeria’s healthcare landscape. He pointed to the significant benefits of knowledge and skill transfer from the Diaspora, which could serve as a catalyst for innovation and growth in the health sector.
The meeting concluded with a shared vision to establish a collaborative platform bridging the gap between local and Diaspora healthcare professionals, with the ultimate goal of improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
