In a move aimed at addressing long-standing concerns around building safety, the Lagos State Government has launched the Certified Accreditors Programme (CAP)a strategic initiative designed to enhance oversight in the construction industry and prevent building collapses.
The programme, which was unveiled during a stakeholder engagement with public and private sector players, stems from the recommendations of a 2021 panel set up to tackle structural failures across the state. CAP brings together government regulators and private sector professionals to ensure more rigorous supervision and compliance with building codes.
As part of the rollout, 111 certified accreditors—comprising consultants and monitoring officers—have been inducted to support regulatory agencies. These accreditors will be responsible for screening structural drawings, conducting site inspections, and ensuring adherence to construction standards throughout project lifecycles.

“This initiative is central to our commitment to creating a safer and more prosperous Lagos,” said the state’s representative. “Our aim is to protect lives and property, and we’re calling on developers, engineers, architects, and homeowners to work with us in upholding safety standards.”
For Nigerians in the diaspora looking to invest in real estate or develop property back home, the CAP initiative signals a stronger regulatory framework and safer building environment—an important assurance for those planning residential or commercial projects in Lagos.
With this new step, Lagos sets a precedent for safer urban development, building trust and confidence among local residents and diaspora investors alike.
