Enugu State has taken a significant step toward economic revitalization as diaspora groups pledge their commitment to collaborate with the state government in driving investment and development. This initiative aims to transform the state’s economy from its current $4.4 billion valuation to a target of $30 billion.
Dr. Chy Agbayi, National President of the Enugu State Association in the United States (Enugu USA), led a delegation of diaspora leaders to the Enugu State Government House on Monday. She commended Governor Peter Mbah for his visionary leadership and ongoing efforts to prioritize key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“We are inspired by the governor’s focus on creating a state that is not only attractive for investment but also secure, livable, and economically viable. We, as diasporians, are eager to partner with his administration to bring more growth and opportunities to Enugu,” Dr. Agbayi said.
Governor Mbah’s administration has embarked on transformative projects, including the establishment of Smart Green Schools to integrate modern technology into education, the development of 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centers to reduce maternal and child mortality, and extensive infrastructure development in rural and urban areas.
Representing the governor at the meeting, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, highlighted the administration’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement. “We are intentional about every policy and project, ensuring our people take ownership for sustainability,” he noted.
Key Focus Areas:
1. Education:
Enugu allocates 33% of its 2024-2025 budget to education.
Initiatives like the Institute of Experiential Learning aim to revolutionize teaching methods with advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Robotics.
2. Healthcare:
The state is prioritizing maternal and child health by establishing well-equipped primary healthcare centers.
Other healthcare facilities are being revamped to support medical tourism.
3. Infrastructure:
Major roads connecting rural and urban areas are under construction to reduce post-harvest losses and promote economic activities.
Dr. Agbayi called on other diaspora groups to support Governor Mbah’s vision. She emphasized the importance of leveraging resources and expertise from abroad to foster a sustainable economy and make Enugu a model state for development in Nigeria.
Participants in the meeting included Mrs. Olangwa Ezeukwu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora Matters, and presidents of diaspora organizations from Europe, the UAE, and South America, who joined virtually.
With this partnership, Enugu State aims to become a hub for investment, education, and healthcare excellence, setting a benchmark for other states in Nigeria.
