In a groundbreaking initiative highlighting the power of the diaspora in fostering Nigeria’s educational development, Edukate, an innovative education financing platform, hosted a transformative reception at the Abuja Continental Hotel. The event, spearheaded by Co-Founder Tosin Adebisi and Director Mercy Gilbert, brought together influential stakeholders to champion accessible and impactful education for Nigerian youth, both at home and abroad.
The event celebrated a remarkable achievement—raising over £3,000 through the Diaspora Fund to support a Nigerian student studying in the United Kingdom. This initiative underscored the role of the Nigerian diaspora in bridging education funding gaps and empowering bright students who face financial barriers.
“We are not just funding education; we are funding dreams and building a nation ready to lead in the 21st century,” said Adebisi, emphasizing Edukate's mission to redefine education financing through community-driven efforts and strategic partnerships.
Edukate's unique model, described as a fusion of GoFundMe and Airbnb, provides bespoke solutions to connect students, institutions, and donors. The platform aims to support 1,000 students in 2025 through scholarships, partnerships with international universities, and the development of digital tools to facilitate access to funding.
The event featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, and an awards ceremony honoring distinguished contributors. Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, recipient of the Edukate Trailblazer Award, praised the initiative, saying, “Edukate and Edufund are transforming lives and building futures.” She highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering partnerships between local and international institutions to improve educational access for Nigerian students.
Corporate partners like Oluwatobi, CEO of Payshiga, also expressed their support, stating, “Edukate is redefining the narrative for education stakeholders. Supporting their mission means investing in a brighter, more competitive Nigeria.”
The event showcased the transformative impact of diaspora contributions in addressing Nigeria’s education challenges. From funding scholarships to organizing community events like webinars and fundraisers, Edukate is creating a global network of support for education.
As the evening concluded, attendees were encouraged to contribute to Edukate’s mission, with funds directed toward scholarships, knowledge-sharing platforms, and institutional collaborations. Dr. Ifeolu Oluronbi, Edukate’s Policy and Programmes Manager, summarized the night’s impact:
“Education is the great equalizer. Every contribution tonight is an investment in the future of Nigeria, Africa, and the world—a future where our youth lead industries with innovation, and our nation shines as a beacon of development.”
Through initiatives like this, the Nigerian diaspora continues to play a vital role in shaping the nation’s future, demonstrating the immense potential of collaboration in building a brighter tomorrow.
